A. & P.G. Castiglioni - BIOGRAPHY



Livio (1911-1979) , Pier Giacomo (1913-1968) and Achille Castiglioni (1918-2002) are three Milanese architects and designers , of which the best known is the youngest of the three, Achille Castiglioni. Children of the sculptor Giannino, the three brothers have all graduated in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano.
Pier Giacomo, after graduating in architecture in 1937 collaborates with his brother Livio and Luigi Caccia Dominioni for the design of Phonola. Since 1944, the three brothers opened a studio in Piazza Castello, where they devoted themselves together on projects of urban planning and architecture and product design until 1968, when Achille Castiglioni decided to continue alone its activities to focus on furniture and on industrial design.
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni have worked together on many occasions being able to be taken of inventiveness combined with the unique ability to meet the needs of marketing and public.
This ability to interpret their attention and led them to create products that have allowed him to win many awards, to forge strong collaborations ( such as Kartell, Zanotta, Flos, Bernini, Siemens, Knoll, Poggi, Lancia, Ideal Standard, Arflex, Alessi ) and thus achieve an international reputation.
Some of the most important works of the brothers are lamps, an aspect which Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni are known as one of the greatest designers of the light. One of the most important light project is is the Arco lamp , which was designed in 1962 for Flos.
It is an object icon of Italian design and is part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the MoMA in New York , and the second one is the lamp bracket , which is designed by Achille Castiglioni with Pio Manzu in 1969 , was awarded the Compasso d'Oro in 1979.
At his death, in 2002 , Achille Castiglioni was buried in the Monumental Cemetery in Milan.
Fourteen of his major works are located at the MOMA in New York, but also many other important galleries around the world showcase their works.
